Fast Food

Fast Food restaurants and cafes are very popular all over the world. But they aren’t like ordinary restaurants.

There aren’t waiters. You order your food at the counter and pay for it at the same time. You get your food in a bag or a box. There are no plates. There aren’t any knives, forks and spoons. You eat with your fingers.

Drinks are all in paper or plastic cups. There are no saucers. You eat your meal.

Then you throw all the bags, boxes and cups away.

It’s easy. It’s cheap and it’s fast.

Task: Find out which restaurant is that: fast food (FR) or ordinary (OR).

(Какой ресторан обычный, а какой – быстрого питания?)

Variant  1.

  1. You eat with a knife and a fork.

“My New School Is Fantastic”

Rita Nelson is fourteen, and she has changed her school because her parents moved to another town this summer.

“Let me tell you about my new school. I’m having a great time. All pupils are very friendly, but it’s very different from my old school. I can tell you! First of all school starts at 8.00 here, a whole, hour before it did in that school. This morning I forgot about it and got to school ten minutes late, so the teacher put a note into my record-book. I was really angry!

There are a lot of other differences in this school, of course. We have seven lessons here almost every day. What else? The school day is different, too. In my former school we finished school at 3.00, and then most pupils went home. Here we finish lessons at 3.30, and then most pupils go to sports practice. Well, they love sports here.

I joined gymnastics and football clubs here. A lot of girls play football in this school. I had my first practice yesterday, and I feel tired today.

Another important thing here is learning to do practical things. Their metal and wood shops are like small factories, and we are taught to drive as well. It’s fantastic. I had my first lesson in driving a tractor yesterday.”

It began raining heavily and he was too tired to go to another hotel. So he agreed to spend the night with another traveler. A porter showed both of them to their room, took in their things and wished them good night. Soon the two men went to sleep.

Suddenly Mr. Green heard some noise. He opened his eyes but didn't see anything. It was quite dark. "What's the matter?" Mr. Green asked in surprise. The second traveler answered, "I am very sorry, I had to wake you up. I am not well. Please, open the window quickly."

Mr. Green got out of bed and began looking for matches, but he could not find them in the dark, so he tried to find the window. It took him some time and at last he thought he had found it. But he could not open it. As the voice of the traveler became weaker and weaker, Mr. Green took a chair and broke the window with it. Then the man said that he was much better. The two of them went to bed at once and slept till morning.

When they woke up the next morning they were surprised to see that Mr. Green had broken to pieces a large mirror instead of the window.

MY SUMMER HOLIDAYS

I (to be) a student. Every day I have to visit classes and do my homework. I (to work) hard to achieve my aim. I want to become a teacher of biology. Sometimes I get tired and need a good rest. Then I meet my friends and we have a lot (of, on, at) fun. But the best me to rest is my summer holidays. When summer (to come), I can meet my friends every day. I can visit my relatives more often. We may talk for hours, discuss our family life and plans for (present, future, sometimes). I have a lot of hobbies. They (to be) music, nature and communication. In summer I have more time for my favourite music and may listen to it for hours. Almost (everyone, every, everybody) summer I spend in the village, where my parents (to live). I try to help my parents with the house work and spend with them my free time. In my native village I have a lot of friends. With some of them we studied at the same school and still have common interests and hobbies. In the evening we gather together, go for a walk or organize a party. When I am in the village, I like to observe the life of animal and plants. It is (amazing, awful, interesting) and useful for me. And when I spend time with my friends, we usually go to the river, lie in the sun, do sports and have a lot of fun. After my summer holidays I am full of energy and desire to study further.

At Christmas, which is a home and family celebration in Britain, those who live away try to get back home. Christmas is the biggest holiday of the year.

As Christmas comes nearer, everyone is buying Christmas presents for friends and relatives. At Christmas people try to give the children everything they want.

The children count the weeks, then the days, to Christmas.

On Christmas Eve families and friends gather for the festivities. Housewives are busy preparing food, and children are sent to bed. They are told that if they don’t go to sleep, Father Christmas will not bring them any presents. Then, when they are asleep, the parents come into their bedrooms and leave the presents near their beds, or under the Christmas – tree, or in a stocking hanging up somewhere in the room.

Task: Fill the table (Заполни таблицу).

London

London is the capital of Great Britain. London is a very old town. London is two thousand years old. Many years ago London was a small town on the Thames. There were a lot of villages round it. After many years London and three hundred villages grew into a very large city. Some of the names of those villages are the names of the streets in modern London-Kensington, Westminster.

Now London is a beautiful city with large squares and parks. The city of London is the business centre. East End includes the poor districts. West of London is the West End where rich people live.

Trafalgar Square is in the centre of the West End of London. In the centre of Trafalgar Square there is the column made of granite. On the top of the column there is a 17-feet-tall statue of Admiral Nelson who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1809. The total high of the monument is 184 feet (44 meters). On the pedestal is a bronze relief cast from a captured French cannon, representing Nelson’s victory.

On the North side of Trafalgar Square is the National Gallery.

The National Gallery has one of the finest collections of pictures in the world.

Trafalgar Square is one of the busiest place in London, where people go to and from the work, it is hard to cross the street.

School years.

Talking about British schools, it's hard to know where to begin because there's so much to say. First of аll, children start school at the age of four or five. After primary school they go to secondary school which is usually from11 to 16. But of course mаnу pupils stay at school until they are 18.

What British students study at school seems very much the same to mе as what they study in Russian schools. Тhеу study English, and the first modern foreign language is usually French. Thе second foreign language is German or Spanish or sometimes Russian.

Russian isn't taught in very mаnу schools, I’m sorry to say. I think Russian is а very important language because Russia is а very important world power. And I would like Russian to bе taught more often. Му children, Kathy and Robert, learn Russian at their school in Newcastle.

Some subjects taught in Britain are not the same as those taught at your school. Some of them are Religious Studies, Art and Drama, and Science. For instance, Science is а mixture of Вiology, Chemistry and Physics and is taught in а very practical way.

In fact I never liked аnу of these subjects.

That's why I teach English Literature at Newcastle University now!

The sailor and the monkeys

A ship stopped at the coast of South Africa. One of the sailors left the ship and went to a town near the coast. He had some blue caps made of wool in a bag and wanted to sell them in the town. The sun was hot and the sailor decided to have a rest in the forest. He sat down under a big tree, took one of the caps out of his bag and put it on his head. He slept for some time.
When the man woke up, he took his cap off and wanted to put it into his bag with the other caps. But he saw that there were no caps in it now. Where were they?
“Where are my caps?” he cried.
Then the sailor heard a great noise in the trees above his head. He looked up and saw monkeys, and each monkey had a blue cap on its head!
“Give me back my caps, you monkeys!” he cried. But the monkeys didn’t listen to him. They only jumped from tree to tree and made a great noise.
“Give me back my caps!” he cried again and again. But nothing helped. The monkeys only looked at him.
Then the sailor was very angry. He took off the blue cap, threw it on the ground and cried, “You have taken all my caps! You can have this cap too!”

How Singing Began

We know that people learned to write long, long ago. For more than 7,000 years people have been writing down their thoughts. But even before people learned to write they could sing! Music began even before writing.
The people of old times drew themselves on rocks. Some of the pictures that preserved show dancers and singers, and also people playing some musical instruments. So our earliest ancestors were fond of music.
How did people learn to sing? What musical instruments did they play? Archaeologists and musicologists give the answer to these questions.
Our ancestors lived in groups because only together they could get their food and defend themselves from wild animals. They learned to make tools and work together.
The group of early men worked together like an orchestra and they usually murmured to each movement of their hand or foot. Without the murmuring (or “singing”) they could not do the work.
Later people learned to make other and better tools and it was not necessary to sing during their work. But singing began, and there are songs in many countries which are probably children of these first work songs.
When man made his earliest tools, he learned to make musical instruments, too. Those pictures on rocks show people playing musical instruments. A very careful analysis of the bones of animals that archaeologists found in a number of ice-age camps show that the men of that time could use them for making sounds. So bones of animals, horns, pieces of wood were man’s first musical instruments. By blowing into horns or bones people could make a very loud sound. They could also make sounds by beating one piece of wood against another or a piece of wood against a stone. People of that time could also use strings and fur to make musical instruments. That was the time when people did not have metal. And yet they could sing and were fond of music.

1984 is so cool! It’s completely different from other books. It’s a serious book, but rather depressing. My friends like Tolkien. I can’t get into all that magic and fantasy stuff.

Speaker 2

The Picture of Dorian Grey is fantastic. I’ve read it four times. In fact, I love everything Oscar Wilde ever wrote.

Speaker 3

I am pretty sure Lord of the Rings is the best one. I’ve read it at least 5 times. The movie is excellent too, but the book is better than the movie.

Speaker 4

I don’t have a favourite book or even a favourite author. I’ve just started reading the book about two very different Internet organizations. I think it’s a very entertaining, informative and well – researched book.

Speaker 5

Harry Potter, actually, I should really be doing revision for my exams but instead I’m reading all the books about Harry Potter.

1.

The symbols of London

2.

Means of travelling

3.

World record holder

4.

A sweet in the street

5.

On the road

6.

A healthy but difficult choice

7.

An unusual hobby

8.

Conflict over roads

A.

The British are enthusiastic about mobility. They think that the ability to travel far and frequently is their right. People can spend up to two or three hours commuting to London or another big city and arrive back at their homes in the countryside only late in the evening. They put up with the long journey because they want their families to avoid the unhealthy lifestyle of big cities.

B.

Most journeys to work are made by private road transport. It leads to the pollution so familiar to many big cities, and to traffic jams. Congestion is especially high in Britain because the British do not welcome the idea of building new roads. They don’t like living close to them. Each proposal to build a new road is criticised, so it’s not easy to improve the road situation.

C.

Perhaps because the trains were the first means of transport in Britain many people still have a romantic outlook on them. Thousands of train-lovers spend a lot of time looking for information about trains, especially old steam engines. Many enthusiasts spend their free time restoring and repairing old trains. They even earn some money by offering rides to tourists.

D.

It is possible to travel between any two towns or cities by either road or rail. In some parts of the country there is a very good rail network but most commercially successful trains run between London and the largest cities in the country. By modern European standards British trains are not fast. Coach services are generally even slower than trains but are much cheaper. It explains why they are still in use.

E.

Britain is one of the few countries in Europe where double-decker buses are a common sight. Although single-deckers have been in use since 1960s, London still has many double-deckers in operation. They are world-famous, an image associated with the city. Another London icon is the black taxi. Normally, these traditional taxis cannot be hired by phone. You simply have to find one on the street.

F.

In 1953, most schoolchildren walked to school. For this reason, school crossing patrols were introduced. This ‘patrol’ consists of an adult wearing a bright waterproof coat and carrying a stick with a circle on top of it, which reads ‘STOP’. Armed with this ‘lollipop’, the adult walks out into the middle of the road, stops the traffic and allows the children to cross.

G.

On 9 January 2013, the London Underground (or the Tube) celebrated 150 years since the first underground journey. It is both the world's oldest underground railway and the oldest rapid transit system. It was also the first underground railway to operate electric trains. The Underground has 268 stations and 400 km of track, making it the longest metro system in the world by route length.

A.

Hamleys is the best toyshop in the UK. It has seven floors of toys, games and sweets. The shop assistants often dress up in costumes of famous characters from fairy tales and stories. Because of this the place looks like a magic land. The atmosphere is wonderful, and the shop really has everything young ones could ever want.

B.

Harrods, perhaps London's most famous department store, is named after Charles Harrods, who opened a family grocer's shop on the site in 1849. The little shop has grown and become a symbol for expensive and glamorous shopping. It contains over 300 departments selling luxury items, from furniture and ladies fashion to sports equipment. Harrods continues to astonish customers from around the world with first-class service and product quality.

C.

The Old Umbrella Shop is one of the shops that hasn’t changed from the early twentieth century. Inside it looks exactly as it was years ago. There are old telephones, shelves, shop windows and an umbrella museum. What's more, it still sells umbrellas and doesn’t want to specialize in anything else. The shop has faithful clients who have been coming there for years.

D.

Muara Kuin is an unusual river market in Indonesia. With the sunrise people from local villages arrive here by boat with fresh fruit and vegetables. Buyers get to the market in the same way. Nobody goes on shore, all business is done from boats. If you wish to get a cup of tea, there are special motor boats selling drinks and cookies.

E.

The city of Dongguan in China has the world's largest shopping mall. There are seven zones in it, which are designed to look like world's cities and regions. In no time you'll get from Paris to Amsterdam. Take a lift and it will take you from Europe to Canada. There's even a small river with boats, where you can relax and take a trip after shopping.

F.

Hope and Greenwood is a sweet shop in London. It offers traditional British sweets. They were popular in the 50s and 70s. Now you can’t find them anywhere else because chocolate factories use new modern recipes and ingredients. This shop offers a unique opportunity to try the desserts of the previous century.

G.

Oxfam is a chain of shops all over the world, which sells very cheap things. Its aim is to attract shoppers by offering them many second-hand and donated things of good quality. Also anyone can come and bring the books or clothes they no longer need. Oxfam takes everything: from stamps to furniture.

Listen to the conversation between Barbara and Richard. Listen carefully and answer the questions.

Richard: Here we are. Brochures for one day excursions. Let's have a look.

Barbara: A riverboat trip! That looks interesting.

Richard: Yeah. It does. Where does it go? And how do we get to the river?

Barbara: It says to go by bus to the river. The bus trip takes about an hour. That costs $ 5 per person each way. Then the boat goes along the river for 4 hours. And we can get a meal on the boat. That sounds good.

Richard: How much does it cost?

Barbara: Well, the boat trip costs $ 20 and the meal is extra if we want it. It all sounds great, but it's a bit expensive - $ 30 each, and that's not counting the food and drinks.

Richard: Yes. It would be relaxing but it is a bit expensive and we wouldn't get much exercise sitting on a bus and a boat, would we?

Barbara: No, you are right. What about horse riding or cycling? Can you ride a horse?

Richard: Not very well. I've only ridden a horse twice in my life and that was long time ago. How much does it cost?

Barbara: Let me see. Horse riding's a bit expensive too - $ 30 for 2 hours.

Richard: What about cycling? That shouldn't be too expensive. Here we are, mountain bikes for hire. $ 10 a day! That's great!

Barbara: And there's a helmet and a repair kit with each one. You have to wear a helmet by law.

Twenty Coins

One afternoon just before Christmas an old gentleman was wandering through the town centre. As many other people the gentleman was looking for some nice presents for his big and friendly family. The gaily-illuminated shops were full of cheerful shoppers. The children were watching in wonder at all the toys in the shop windows. Suddenly the old gentleman noticed a little boy sitting on the pavement. The boy had poor dirty clothes on and was weeping bitterly. The old gentleman didn`t see neither the boy`s parents nor any other adults near him. He came up to the boy and asked him why he was crying. And the little boy said that he had lost a ten pence coin his uncle had given him. The old man put his hand into his pocket and pulled out a handful of coins. He picked out a shiny ten pence coin, and, with a kind smile on his face, gave it to the child. “Thank you very much”, said the little boy, and, drying his eyes, he cheered up at once.

An hour or so later the old man was making his way back home by the same route. To his great surprise he saw the same little boy sitting in the same place. He was crying as bitterly as before. He went up to the boy and asked: “Have you lost the coin I`d given you as well?” “No, I haven`t”, answered the boy. “I haven`t lost your coin. But I still can`t find the first one.” And sighing heavily he added: “If I could find my own coin, I`d have twenty pence now.”

Basketball

It was a rainy day in November, 1891. An instructor at Springfield College in Massachusetts climbed up a ladder and nailed a fruit basket to the wall of the gymnasium. Then he climbed down the ladder. He picked up a football and threw it. The ball went into the basket. As he climbed back up the ladder to get the ball, the man was very glad. Maybe he had solved his problem! Well, he would soon see.

Ten minutes later, eighteen young men ran into the little gym. The instructor put nine boys on one side and one on the other. He told them to throw the ball to each other or bounce it and, when they were near the wall where the basket was nailed, to try and throw the ball into the basket.

The game started, and what a game it was!

When several of the young men fell to the floor as they were playing, the instructor stopped the game. “Something is wrong in this game,” he said. “This is too unpleasant.”

He sat down and took out a piece of paper and a pencil. “Now let’s have some rules – and let’s observe them!” He paused for a minute, thinking. Then he began, “Rule number one: No one can run with the ball! You have to throw it or bounce it to someone else on your side.”

They all agreed that it was a good rule.

“Rule number two: If a man pushes another player to get the ball, the game will stop. The man pushed will have a free throw at the basket. Nobody must try to catch the ball on its way to the basket. ”

That rule, too, was good. Quickly, other rules were made. When the game started again, there was less pushing, fewer men falling, and better passing of the ball from one man to another. A second basket was nailed to the wall at the other end of the gym.

The man, who nailed the fruit basket to the wall, was a young Canadian. His name was James Naismith, and he was a college teacher.

An Incident

It was the early evening rush-hour in Montgomery. Mrs. Rosa Parks had just finished work for the day and was waiting at a bus-stop for a bus to take her home. When the bus arrived, she got on through the front door and dropped her twenty cents fare into the coin box next to the driver. Then she quickly stepped off the bus again and hurried to the back to board by the rear door.

Standing at the back of the moving bus, she noticed that although there were a number of seats free in the first four rows, there was only one empty seat in her part of the bus. She walked forward to the fifth row and sat down, glad to have found a place to sit. At the next stop, some more passengers got on and filled the empty seats in the first four rows. One man could not find a seat, however, and stood in the aisle next to Mrs. Parks waiting for her to get up for him. Mrs. Parks did not move.

The bus driver swore and stopped the bus in the middle of the road. He had been watching Mrs. Parks and the man in his rear mirror and was very angry. He got out of his seat, walked down the aisle and ordered her to stand. Mrs. Parks quietly but firmly refused. She had been standing all day in the department store where she worked and was tired. The bus driver swore at her, and, when she still refused to move, called the police. Mrs. Parks was still sitting in her seat when two policemen arrived a few minutes later. When she again refused to get up, the policemen arrested her for breaking the city bus regulations.

A.Dobbie Dobson. “We were evacuated later on and were billeted with a wonderful family in Lancashire. When my mother eventually found my little brother she arranged for him to join us, but as we were already overcrowded he went to stay with a family in the next street. One day my mother and the lady who we were billeted with went around to see him and found him on hands and knees scrubbing floors. They were very upset and although there were ten children in our family , the lady insisted he came back with us. The lady and her husband had a heart of gold and she and mum stayed friends long after the war until mum died.”

B. Tommy  Mac. “Like every other city in Britain, Glasgow was bursting with excitement. The entire city was a little mad. Schools were closed for the day. At the bottom of the street the dance was the ‘eightsome reel’ – this was Scotland’s national dance, and everyone could join in. Music was everywhere and lights! To see the lights go on again was a miracle in itself”.

C. Svetlana Pankratova. “My grandma and her two little sons were captured in Russia during the war. They were sent to a labour camp inGermany. Grandmother told us that many people pitied the Russians and shared some of their food with them, but that food was almost nothing, and she had to go begging with other captives to local people to feed her two children. Some of the locals were friendly and gave something , but others were stony faced and she knew in advance that they would give nothing. When the war was over my grandmother learnt that her husband, my grandfather, had also been captured, and had been working in a camp nearby.”

D. Walter Morison. “… the Germans treated us well and observed the Geneva Convention, an international treaty on the treatment of PoWs. But of course we wanted to go home. And we often spoke about it. It was technically demanding, exiting, dangerous; a sport really. However, we learned with horror that 50 RAF officers who had escaped from Stalag Luft III had been shot. This was no longer cricket. There was also the worry that we might be caught in a chaotic no – man’s land between the Russians in the east and the Anglo - Americans  to the west.”

E. Mary MacGween. “… At that time I was visiting my husband, who had been injured when the lorry he was travelling in overturned, crushing his leg beneath the huge searchlight. He was in Surrey and it was there I saw the plight of his fellow patients. I saw young men with vacant stares, shell – shocked and suffering from the loss of memory.”

F. Joan Vass. “Having passed as a qualified balloon operator I was sent to help defend the City of Steel, Sheffield. There was a crew of 12 women included a sergeant and a corporal. Part of our duties was guard duty several times a week. But our job took priority. More often than not we would be hauled out of our warm beds to either fly the balloon or pull her into wind because of a wind change. I think, I was privileged to work as a Balloon Operator, one of the toughest jobs in the Royal Air Force.”

G. Eric Brown. “I don’t know the details of the methods used to place children for evacuation, but I do recall my parents who had a car, driving my sister and me to a humble cottage on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Our “adopting” family had children of their own, and my recollection was that they were not well off. Then my parents returned to collect us and we were taken to another location. The place was called Craigs, and thus began a few years of the most memorable times for young children. I am grateful to the owners of the house for making it available to us children during those harrowing times.”

I’d like to complain about the amount of advertising on TV. When I sit down to watch a show suddenly the film stops. Really, watching a TV program is like watching a hundred commercials. But I never watch them when I think they put unnecessary pressure on me. I go to the kitchen and have a snack during the commercial interruptions.

Reading is like a great adventure for me. Starting a book is always a great thrill, and I want the writer to carry me off to new, unknown places, places I’ve never been to before. The Adventure of Three Students

In 1895 Mr. Sherlock Holmes and I spent some weeks in one of our great University towns. It was during this time that the facts which I am going to tell you took place.

One evening we received a visit from a certain Mr. Hilton Soames, lecturer at the College of St. Luke’s. Mr. Soames was so excited that it was clear that something very unusual had happened.

“I hope, Mr. Holmes,” said he, “that you can give me a few hours of your time. A very unpleasant thing has taken place at our college and I don’t know what to do.”

“I am very busy just now,” my friend answered. “Could you call to the police?”

“No, no, my dear sir, that is absolutely impossible. It is one of these cases when it is quite necessary to avoid scandal. I am sure you will keep our secret. You are the only man in the world who can help me. I beg you, Mr. Holmes, to do what you can. ”

Holmes agreed, though very unwillingly, and our visitor began his story.

“I must explain to you, Mr. Holmes,” he said, “that tomorrow is the first day of the examination for the Fortescue Scholarship. I am one of the examiners. My subject is Greek. The first of the examination papers consists of a piece of Greek translation which the candidates for the scholarship have not seen before. Of course, every candidate would be happy if he could see it before the examination and prepare it in advance. So much care is taken to keep it secret.”

“Today at about three o’clock I was the proofs of the examination papers. At four- thirty I went out to take tea in a friend’s room, and I left the papers upon my desk. I was absent a little more than an hour.”

“When I approached my door, I was surprised to see a key in it. For a moment I thought I had left my own key there, But when I put my hand in my pocket, I found my key in it. The other key to my room belonged to my servant, Bannister, who has been looking after my room for ten years. I am absolutely sure of his honesty. I understood that he had entered my room to ask if I wanted tear.”

A Friend in Need

One afternoon I was sitting in the lounge of the Grand Hotel in Yokohama. Burton came into the lounge presently and caught sight of me. He seated himself in the chair next to mine. He was a merchant. A conversation began and he told me his story.

“There was a fellow here last year, who had the same name as mine; he was the best card player I ever met. Lenny Burton he called himself.”

“No, I don’t believe the name.”

“He was quite a remarkable player. I used to play with him a lot. He was in Kobe for some time.”

“It’s rather a funny story,” he said. “He was a bad fellow. I liked him. He was always well-dressed and good looking. Of course, he drank too much. Fellows like him always do. Once in a quarter he got some money from home and he made a bit more by card-playing. He won a lot of mine, I know that.”

“He came to see me in my office one day and asked me for a job. I was rather surprised. He told me that there was no more money coming from home and he wanted to work. I asked him how old he was.”

“Thirty-five,” he said.

“And what have you been doing before?” I asked him.

“Well, nothing very much,” he said.

I couldn’t help laughing.

“I’m afraid I can’t do anything for you just now,” I said. “Come back and see me in another thirty-five years, and I’ll see what I can do.”

He didn’t move. He went rather pale. Then he told me that he had bad luck at cards for some time. He didn’t have a penny. He couldn’t pay his hotel bill and they wouldn’t give him any credit.

I looked at him for a bit. I could see now That he was all to pieces. He had been drinking more than usual and he looked fifty.

“Well, isn’t there anything you can do except play cards?” I asked him.

“I can swim,” he said.

“Swim!” I could hardly believe my ears.

“I swam for my university.”

“I was a good swimmer myself when I was a young man,” I said.

Suddenly I had an idea. When I was a young man I swam round the beacon in Kobe. It’s over three miles and it’s rather difficult because of the currents round the beacon. Well, I told young Burton about it and said to him that if He’d do it I’d give him a job.

“But I’m not in very good condition,” he said.

I didn’t say anything. He looked at me for a moment and then he agreed.

“All right,” he said. “When do you want me to do it?”

I looked at my watch. It was just after ten. “The swim shouldn’t take you much over an hour and a quarter. I’ll drive over at half past twelve and meet you.”

“Done,” he said.

We shook hands. I wished him good luck and he left me. I had a lot of work to do that morning and could only get to the place at half past twelve. But he never turned up. The currents round the beacon were more then he could do. We didn’t get the body for about three days.”

I didn’t say anything for a moment or two. I was a little shocked. Then I asked Burton a question.

“When you offered him a job, did you know that he’d be drowned?”

He gave a little laugh and looked at me with those kind blue eyes of his.

“Well, I hadn’t got a vacancy in my office at the moment.”

Granny Morgan

Andy and Kate were pleased. Today was Friday, and that was the day when Gran came to tea. Of all their relatives, they liked their grandmother the best. She was good fun.
Granny Morgan was sitting at the kitchen table when they came in. There was a big plate of banana sandwiches in front of her.
“Hello, Gran!” said Andy.
“Hello, you two. How was school today?”
“OK, thanks,” said Kate.
“And how was your trip to the National History Museum?” she asked.
“Oh, that was great,” said Kate. “We had a wonderful time.”
“We saw some fantastic dinosaurs but I liked the gorillas best,” he said. He took another sandwich.
“I remember when I was a young girl; I often went to museums and art galleries. One day I met Picasso in an art gallery in the south of France.”
“I don't believe you!” said Kate.

2.

3.

4.

A sweet in the street

5.

6.

7.

The Underground has 268 stations and 400 km of track, making it the longest metro system in the world by route length

A Tragedy

The plane had taken off from the air-field in London, and the journey to South Africa, to Johannesburg had started. It was just after the war, and it was not a jet, as it is nowadays, but it was a big plane with four engines, and four propellers, of course.

When a few minutes later we were crossing the Channel, one of the engines went wrong, but the stewardess said there were three engines left and the passengers were quite safe.

When the plane reached the Mediterranean Sea, the second engine broke, but the stewardess told us there was nothing to worry about because two engines were quite enough to keep us in the air.

As we got near to the shores of Africa, somebody said that only one propeller was working. The stewardess kept her mouth shut this time.

Presently we were flying over the jungle in Central Africa and fellow travelers were terribly upset. Women were holding their children tighter and tighter and men were drinking more and more heavily…I was terribly nervous, and as I looked down, I could not help thinking of death.

At that moment the loud-speaker was switched on, and the captain’s voice was heard, “Ladies and gentlemen, I have tragic news for you.”

The faces of the passengers turned pale. Some burst into tears. My heart sank into my boots…

The captain continued in a gloomy voice, It is my sad duty to inform you that England has lost her last football match against Scotland.”

A Dangerous Place

Paula had always wanted to go to New York and now she had the chance at last. She was a journalist, and her newspaper was sending her there to do a series of articles on the city. But before she left her home in London, several friends warned her to be careful and not to go out alone at night in New York. “It’s a dangerous place. People get robbed or even killed on broad daylight!” they told her.

But when she got there, the only thing she was afraid of was exhaustion. It was such an exciting city that she never got any sleep. It took her two weeks to do the articles and she had to interview a lot of people but she enjoyed every minute of it. She completely forgot all her friends’ warnings until the day she went back to London. It all began in a bar.

She was having lunch there when she suddenly felt someone watching her. She looked up and noticed a man sitting at a table opposite her. He was staring at her, but looked away. She noticed that he had a scar on his cheek. He was about 30 and had short, curly hair. Paula was not worried at all. She had to go to an airline office to rebook her flight home. She wanted an afternoon flight instead of a morning one, as originally planned. On her way there, she stopped to look at something in a shop-window. To her surprise she saw the man follow her. She could see his reflection in the glass. He had stopped just behind her. Suddenly she felt afraid. She walked on. Then she stopped and looked behind her again. But this time she could not see him.

Just then she noticed she had come to the airline office. She went in and after she had finished her business, decided to phone a friend from a telephone booth there. She was carrying a small, portable but very expensive tape-recorder. It was in a black case in which she kept her money and passport as well. But the booth was so small that she had to leave the case outside. When she came out, it had disappeared. Then she saw the red-haired man hurrying out of the office. He had the case in his hand. She shouted but it was too late.
